Review: Bodé Spa – Tranquility served daily.

Like many Torontonians we suffer from the aches and pain of daily life. Thankfully we came across a place that helped us forget what it’s like to live a busy life.

Quietly located on a side street in Toronto’s fancy Yorkville neighborhood,  Bodé Spa For Men opened its doors not long ago. Situated on the second floor of a tri-floor complex its recently manicured interior is reminiscent of most day spas. With its clean, brightly lit open concept space this is the place where dirt, grim and stress are left at the front door.

As you walk in you’ll first notice their UFO shaped front desk. It’s a conversation piece no doubt but it helps divide the space and makes for a great way to interact with the staff no matter where you’re standing. In the middle of this center piece you’ll find a receptionist. During our visit we had the privilege of meeting Nancy, a friendly, courteous, well mannered lady who greeted us by our last name  (oh so classy). As we walked past her desk she took our coats and offered some refreshments – a glass or water or tea to help us calm the nerves. Once checked-in she directed us to the change room where we were given a key to a locker containing two towels and a robe. These half sized lockers were enough to put away our gym bag, day time clothes and stow away our valuables.

Now undressed we had the option to take a quick shower before our deep tissue massage. Naturally we took the opportunity to cleanse ourselves before being handled. As far as showers go it was your standard one person glass enclosure. The rain shower did provide a wider area for water to rain down on us. It was a steamy affair and we loved every second of it.

Once dry and robed we had the pleasure of meeting Daniel, Bodé’s Owner and Massage Practitioner (MP). A well spoken, knowledgeable spa-kipedia of the modern age, he offered tips and tricks one only accumulates after years of being in the spa industry. We were surprised by the amount of insight we gathered from our brief chat with him.

Got questions regarding waxing? Ask Daniel. Can decide what moisturizer is best for your skin type? Ask Daniel. Need shaving advice? Ask Daniel. We could have easily spent three hours talking to him and come out with enough knowledge to write a book.

Following our discussion, Daniel introduced us to one of many massage rooms. Nothing out of the ordinary here – clean sheets, soft music and low lighting. In typical fashion we undressed as he waited outside. Once under the covers, face down and relaxed he proceeds to work the knots and kink of our neck, back, shoulders and legs.

We’re not going to lie, it was great having the stress pressed out of our bodies. In particular we were impressed by the shoulder blade stretch Daniel performed. It was unusual but a welcomed treat. Moving lower he worked our legs. These machines go through some tough times as we server cocktails to our guests. So it was without hesitation we asked Daniel to focus on these beauties.

After what seemed like a five hour full body massage we were presented with lemon/mint tea and quiet alone time. Under different circumstances we would have fallen asleep alongside our new found serenity and inner peace but we knew this (like all good things) must come to an end.

Reality hits and we attempt to get up and walk back into the world. We take another quick shower to remove any excess oil our bodies may have accumulated and make our way toward the front desk where Daniel and Nancy await. After another insightful chat we find ourselves having to make a sad decision – to walk past the main door and face the cool, dark night.

Till next time Bodé. Thanks for the memories and excellent service.

First impressions:

Clean. Tidy. Professional knowledgeable personnel.

A full service spa for men they offer everything from haircuts, razor shaves, massages to Bro-zillians (yes, a Brazilian for guys) and everything in between. Their Canadian Certified Pedorthists will even help you with foot and lower limb problems including Arthritis, Achilles tendinitis, shin splints and footwear selection.

A calming experience. Hindered only by the fact they were closing for the evening. Small details make a big difference. Tea, robes are good but having friendly staff who treat you like royalty makes this place stand out.

Reasonably priced services. A 30 minute massage (with a Massage Practitioner) cost $50, $65 if done with an RMT. One hour worth of bliss will costs you $75 and $95 respectively. Waxing starts at $10 for the nose and ears and go as high as $90 for a full Bro-zillian. Having opened recently means they are still building their customer base. Visit their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter for ongoing deals and promotions.

This is a place we’d be happy to return to or send our clients to after a night of partying.
